Past
“Come on Merrit, it’s our turn. We’re up next.” She says excitedly twirling around in her fluffy skirt.
I stand behind the curtain watching my own personal mirror. She’s not scared, she’s not frightened of the crowd. She walks over and grabs my hand, “It’s okay, they love us, everybody loves us.” She says swishing her ponytail of ringlets, “We’re special, we’re twins.”
I shake my head and grab the curtain tighter. She leans in close, “You can be me and I’ll be you. It’ll be just like we practiced at home.”
I take my sister’s hand, trusting her.
My stomach twists as we walk out on the stage. Amelia holding my hand and pulling a flower covered frame beside her. She lets go of the frame, takes my hand and bows to the delight of the crowd that has gathered for our elementary graduation talent show. We take our places looking at each other through the frame. She smiles at me, “Merrit, you ready?”
I nod my head, “Ready.” I’m so scared, but I know my sister loves me and would never let anything bad happen. She loves me, and I love her… we’re best friends and best sisters’ Identical twins. I know everything will always be okay, because we have each other, forever and ever…

The music cues and we strike our pose, mimicking each other’s movements through the frame.
Mirror, Mirror who is looking at you?
We’re twins, that’s who
We’re twins, yes sir… yes ma’am that’s who I am…That’s who she is, or is it me?
I am me, she is she
Except when we pretend I’m her or she’s me.
And when we switch, which do you see?
You can’t tell which is which when we switch
You don’t know who you’re talking to
‘Cause we’re identical ‘dentical ‘dentical
Identical twins…
I follow her lead watching her through the mirror and think how beautiful she is, how beautiful her pink dress is, her smile still proud even though her front teeth are missing. Her dark hair bouncing along with our song. My sister is the most beautiful girl in the world. She’s mine, all mine.
We appear alike
We know, we’re nowhere near alike
She’s sweet
She’s sassy – What does that mean?
You’re busy watching us!
We’re watching you to guess who.
You’re wrong, you’re right
Says you! – It’s two! Me and you…
It’s not – It’s two!
Twins, twins, twins, twins…
Identical twins… That’s us!
Then it was over, she spins me around and we bow. She giggles and grabs me and then the frame before skipping off the stage. She stops just past the curtains, “I told you they would love us!” she spins me around giggling. “We’re superstars. I bet we won!”
I hope she wins, she’s the star.
A bright flash wakes me. “Merrit, it’s storming.”

I’ve watched her all summer.
She watches me too.
Her cat and mouse game.
Coy, yet sly.
Shy, then overtly flirtatious.
I’ve watched every decent and not so decent looking man and older teen boy beg to roll the dice in her game.
They all lose.
They all want a taste.
A feel, a touch of the grand prize.
Pathetic creatures.
Except one.
He knows her game, he plays the same game.
It makes her furious.
Push, pull.
Attention, ignore.
Forward, retreat.
She stands slowly, seductively brushes the sand off her body giving him an accidental glimpse of her pert young breasts in her pink and white polka dot bikini top.
It’s no accident.
She swishes her long dark ponytail as she turns adjusting her tiny matching bottoms before prancing to the water’s edge.
He watches her from behind his dark sunglasses as he sits proudly perched atop his lifeguard stand. He twirls his whistle around his pointer finger with more frustration now. Six times right, six times left. Never five, never seven. Six, always six.
She lets out a high-pitched squeal as the cold water breaks around her slim tanned calves.
We watch her preen and splash salt water against her golden skin. One of her daily shows for her fans scattered close, yet far enough away.
In three, two… one, the pervy married family man with a barreled belly decides to pathetically kick the ball around with his oldest of four children. His game is the same when she preens, he suddenly becomes interested in his children. He purposely misses the ball his oldest boy kicks, allowing it to roll toward her. I assume he makes a lame comment about his kid as she picks up the ball giving him an accidental purposeful show. She knows that’s what he wants, a gawking of her goods. She smiles and hands him the ball as his stressed-out wife with the newest addition to their family on her ample hip calls out his name.
The same game every day, a different male, the same males every day. It’s not the guys her age or the teens with uncontrollable hard-ons that creep me out. It’s his type. The ones who lick their lips and adjust the crotch in their Dad swimsuits.
She walks from the water and across the bleached sand in my direction. She acts like she doesn’t see me as she passes, kicking up sand. She sees me. We watch each other. That’s our game.
A few minutes later, she walks past me again, this time she’s sucking on a bright cherry red popsicle.
She stops in front of the lifeguard stand, he stops spinning his whistle and jumps down.
She flashes a smile exposing her white perfect teeth, then sucks taking a long meaningful lick.
He adjusts his red board shorts then brushes his sun-kissed blonde hair away from his eyes. He reaches out and wipes a sticky drip from the side of her popsicle stained parted mouth.
I turn away as she glances over her shoulder at me. I want to watch. I steal another glance and she’s gone. Red shorts is back on his perch, twirling to six and back again. I look over my shoulder searching for a sign of her.
“Amelia?” a long painful pause, “Merrit!”
I hear my mother’s loud slurred voice and know my day of watching is done.

And I present the conclusion of The Tesla Brothers....
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06VV3FQYL
Jack walks beside me as we pass through the procession of well-wishers. The elders waiting at the end of the line to bestow blessings. Buteo and Osprey standing tall with pride dressed in full tribal skins, stoic, with their best brave faces on display beating their mini drums and chanting along with everyone else.
Then finally, we enter the traditional tepee. My father, the Chief of our dying tribe, sits proudly in front of the altar of burning sage and incense.
The perfumed smoke hangs heavily in the air. I feel Jack’s hand tighten around my waist, “This smoke isn’t good for him.” His words for my ears only.
I nod acknowledging that I heard him. Please let this be quick.
We stop in front of the alter, our son opens his eyes. “The boy.” My father’s voice is calm as he stands, reaching out for his third grandson.
I hold him out through the smoke, placing him in my father’s arms. He reads my body language, seeing the worry on my face. He nods closing his eyes and stands, taking my son away from the smoke.
We watch as he looks closely at our youngest son, unwrapping his tightly tucked blanket, holding him closely to his face inhaling a deep breath. “Earth, old soul.”
My father takes his time examining our last born. He looks over at me, his face full of emotion. Pride that I haven’t seen before “My daughter, he is of pure heart, he is one of us. He will follow in our footsteps, the footsteps of our ancestors.”
He flips him over, examining him before giving him a firm slap on his tiny rear. He let out a fierce loud scream as my father holds him up, red faced and angry, “Aplomado!” He bellows, “Falcon, strong- willed, a survivor. Leader! Our future Chief.”
I hadn’t shed a tear during this ordeal over these last few weeks until now. I have given birth to my father’s replacement. Our tribe will survive.
He holds up our son and leaves the tepee to make the formal announcement. His words pierced my heart, wrapping around my soul choking me. I succeeded. I sealed my fate and the fate of my children.
It was then I collapsed into Jack’s strong arms and cried for myself and what I’d endured and inflicted onto my offspring. I hug the man that I chose to be with. I will never have another restful night or know peace will be with me. I’m selfish in my own choices, and they’ll impact my offspring until it is rectified with the spirits.
And it will be my last born, Aplomado Redmane Tesla, that will hold the family and our traditions close. He will respect the earth and all her bounties, taking what he needs and giving back to her.
He will be the leader of his brothers and what’s left of our tribe and dying nation of Native Americans.

When you know who you are; when your mission is clear and you burn with the inner fire of unbreakable will;
no cold can touch your heart; no deluge can dampen your purpose. You know that you are alive.
